Stonetree Vineyard
Sonoma County Appellation
Zinfandel
source since 1999, Owner George Hillyer is good friends with Joe
and Eva of Timbervine Ranch and had been selling fruit to a Napa
winery famous for their ripe and alcoholic wines. Located (just)
in Sonoma County a short distance from the Petrified Forest in
the Mayacamas Mountains (see map), George named the vineyard after
the petrified wood found throughout the site. This dry farmed
and head pruned vineyard was planted on steeply terraced hillsides
over 30 years ago. Unusually for Zinfandel, it’s wine seems to
age particularly well, judging by the examples of the George’s
home made wines that I’ve tasted going back to the lovely 1988!
Stonetree is another vineyard that I just love to
work in. The views to the north looking out at Mt. Saint Helena
are truly fabulous and together with the lovely old head pruned
vines it makes for a day that leaves me tired from vineyard work
but completely rejuvenated. A true mountain grown Zinfandel. I
just wish there were more of it!
