*FALL 2009 RELEASE (Others Released in Spring 2009)

*2008 CHARDONNAY (Sonoma County) $24
The Sonoma County Chardonnay uses fruit from both of my Chardonnay sources, the Hawk Hill and Parmelee-Hill vineyards. The Hawk Hill component comes from two lots, one picked a little earlier to keep alcohol a little lower and also made with undergoing malo-lactic fermentation so that it maintains a clean, crisp style. Oak influence is, as always, is kept in check and the wine was bottled a little earlier than usual to maintain vibrant apple and citrus fruit notes. The two vineyards work so well together! Bottled with a screwcap.  121 cases produced.

2007 ZINFANDEL – Hillside Vineyards (Sonoma County) $25
The 2007 Zinfandel uses fruit from three sources; the Buck Hill vineyard which is near Santa Rosa, the Stonetree vineyard in the Mayacamas Mountains and a vineyard in the Russian River Valley.  The Stonetree vineyard brings peppery notes and tannin structure, the Buck Hill vineyard brings bright red fruit characters and the Russian River component gives raspberry notes and good acidity.  All mountain grown fruit, this is a ripe and rich Zinfandel that would be great with ribs. 465 cases produced.

2006 SYRAH – Hillside Vineyards (Sonoma County) $28
Silver Medal – Sonoma County Harvest Fair
I like the blending exercise involved in assembling the Hillside Syrah. The goal is to make a wine that is better than the individual parts and to bring out the best facet of each lot. I want the final blend to be a complex and seamless expression of what I think Syrah should be. For this 2006 version, the main components are 46% from Sonoma Mountain’s Rubaiyat vineyard, 10% from Sonoma Valley’s Parmelee-Hill vineyard and then from the Russian River Valley we have 20% from the Dos Aguilas vineyard (that I helped plant) and 16% from the Archer vineyard. The blend has wonderful color, shows some of the peppery and black fruit of Syrah and has a long and seamless finish and excellent balance. This is a wonderful wine with food.  376 cases produced.

*2006 SYRAH – Archer Vineyard (Russian River Valley) $30
Gold Medal – Sonoma County Harvest Fair
The Archer vineyard is a great site located in the rolling hills of Russian River, just south of Healdsburg. Planted with three clones of Syrah, I take a little of each and keep them separate until blending in the spring. This wine shows uncommon richness and concentration, excellent soft tannins and a floral aspect that reminds me of violets and makes me think there might be some Viognier in the blend (there is not). A wine for richer dishes or the cellar. 198 cases produced.

*2006 SYRAH – Parmelee-Hill Vineyard (Sonoma Valley) $30
Silver Medal – Sonoma County Harvest Fair
The Parmelee-Hill vineyard (part of which is also known as the Durell vineyard) is also a source for Chardonnay that was featured in fall of last year. It has excellent Syrah as well. I get fruit from the River Rock block, aptly named as it is a bone jarring drive across the old river stones to get back to my section of the vineyard. The well drained soils allow us to control vine vigor and produce outstanding concentrated fruit. Very smoky and creamy, the wine is almost Australian in style with good richness and great texture and showing some smoky oak from barrels. 148 cases produced.

*2006 CABERNET SHIRAZ – Grandfather’s Cuvée (Sonoma Valley) $30
Silver Medal – Sonoma County Harvest Fair
My second release of this old time, classic Australian blend. The Cabernet component (62%) comes from the McGraw vineyard on a hillside to the west of the winery. There is a higher proportion of Syrah (38%) than last year’s release with the Syrah coming mostly from here at the winery and with a little from the Archer vineyard. Showing typical Cabernet cassis notes and Cabernet structure, but with the sweetness and soft tannins that Syrah and oak bring. The Syrah also fills out the middle palate. An excellent choice for the cellar or to pair with those big rich meals that demand a Cabernet.  298 cases produced.

2007 LATE HARVEST ZINFANDEL (Sonoma Valley) 500ml $20
Each year I select an area in one of the Zinfandel vineyards to use for making a dessert wine. In 2007 this was primarily in the Stonetree vineyard in the Mayacamas Mountains. The idea is to wait an extra week or two for the grapes to get very high in sugar. When the grapes ferment there is enough alcohol produced that the yeast die, leaving the wine sweet and the perfect pairing for bittersweet chocolate. It is like a lighter Port, but only 15% alcohol and 4% sugar. 154 cases produced.

2007 PORT (Sonoma Valley) 500ml $27
Gold Medal – Sonoma County Harvest Fair
Produced using 100% Syrah; 65% from the vineyard in front of the winery and 35% from the Rubaiyat vineyard on Sonoma Mountain. This port has incredibly rich color, great fruit intensity and excellent balance. A great way to end the meal with good dark chocolate or a creamy blue cheese! It has the hallmarks of my previous releases, neither too sweet nor too much alcohol and will continue to improve for many years. 297 cases produced.

*2007 PORT – EnglandCrest Vineyard (Sonoma Valley) 500ml $28
Silver Medal – Sonoma County Harvest Fair
Produced entirely using Syrah from the vineyard around the winery. Compared to the Sonoma Valley Port above, it has a little more tannin and acid and would be better if you like a drier style of Port, or if you wanted to age the wine. 194 cases produced.
