2018 Cabernet Shiraz Futures
My first Cabernet Shiraz was made in 2005 and the style has remained relatively unchanged from that time. The base wine is the Cabernet sauvignon from the McGraw Vineyard just to the west of the winery and this is blended with some of the Estate Syrah to fill out the middle palate and give more roundness to the tannins. In 2018 there has been a minor change with the Syrah coming from the Rossi Ranch. The 2018 Cabernet is more fruit driven and with less tannin structure than normal so I have used the Rossi Syrah for blending as it is always the biggest and most structured of my Syrah wines. The final blend is 75% Cabernet and 25% Syrah *(Shiraz). It shows the lovely cassis fruit of Cabernet together with a balanced oak note from barrel aging and has excellent weight and texture on the palate. I think the wine will continue to improve for another 5 years and then hold for an additional 5-8 years, even though it can be enjoyed in 2021. 193 cases were bottled on July 6th, 2020 under a cork finish.
