2018 Syrah Futures
2018 was the sixth year from when I leased the vineyard and the application of organic fertilizer and restricted irrigation that had given rise to steady improvement with the ’15-’17 Estate Syrah wines was even more evident with the ’18. Each vineyard block was picked and fermented separately and in May when I began to assess the 8 different lots it became evident that I had 2 different styles, basically associated with in front of the winery and the other on drier soils towards the hill. This latter wine was bigger and heavier and became the ’18 Estate Syrah. The lots from in front of the winery were more elegant in style, no less intense but with lower alcohol and showing more of the violet and floral side of Syrah. To preserve freshness this wine was transferred to a 420 gallon “Foudre” in August of 2019 for additional aging and bottled in 2020. This is an elegant and balanced wine that has retained the floral and spicy notes of Syrah and has built a fruit sweetness to hide the tannin structure. It should be ready to drink by late 2020 and I expect it to age gracefully for 10 years (the 2007 Ellen was in a similar style and is drinking beautifully at present) A fitting tribute to my grandmother Ellen. 168 cases produced, bottled under screwcap on July 6th, 2020.
