2019 Zinfandel Futures
2019 was my 10th year working with Zinfandel from the Rossi ranch. It is a fabulous site for Zinfandel and makes a truly distinctive wine; lots of red fruit with great tannin structure and great color. While I normally think that Zinfandel wines are not for aging past 5 years, these wines are an exception as they have such powerful structure to support the fruit and I have kept a number of the wines to follow their evolution. Part of the reason for this potential to age might be the other grape varieties that are interplanted with the Zinfandel. Originally planted in 1910 when it was common to interplant other grapes, there are vines of Petite sirah and Alicante Bouschet, in addition to many others, and those two grapes give great color and tannin structure. Compared to previous versions, this wine has more raspberry fruit notes and less of the brambly notes and I think it is my favorite Zinfandel that I’ve made from Rossi. It should be ready to drink by Spring 2021 and I plan on keeping some for at least 5 more years to watch its evolution. A great wine for ribs or anything grilled. I expect to bottle around 195 cases on August 24th under screwcap.
